Photos from Sept. 14th with Elle Devene!

IMG_4916-1

Saying Elle Devene was stunning is an understatement.  During the break I must have heard three different folk comment that they were positively, undeniably in love.  Lord knows, whatever secret pull Elle had (and I don’t think it was that much of a secret), it certainly came through in the sketches and photos.

As always, we’d like to thank our generous sponsors, Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books went above and beyond with the contest prizes.  If you haven’t figured it out by now, everyone involved with Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore, from the sponsors, to the Windup Space, to Bill and Jeff, are doing this so we can bring this unique life drawing experience to you all twice a month, so if you’re looking to buy a pencil or book or a beer, please consider hitting them up.  Anyways, special thanks to the sponsors, to Russell of the Windup for preventing us from getting thirsty and letting us use his absolutely amazing venue for all this, Jeff for the amazing photographic work, Bill for policing the door against drunk sailors and bear attacks, and to Elle Devene of Gilded Lily Burlesque for being her drop-dead gorgeous self.

Here’s some great sketches Pierrette Montone sent in…

I love the face on that last one.

The first contest, as always, was the “opposite hand” contest.  If you’re left handed, draw with your right, if you’re right handed, draw with your left, and if you’re ambidexterous draw with your mouth, foot, ear . . . usually that last bit is just meant as a joke, but this fellow actually did it.  I’m not sure, but I think he ended up being one of the two winners too (the prize being a free mystery shot).

Mike May sent in these sketches . . . the first drawing in the first sketch (and also the photo above) is from the “someone in the crowd yell out a random noun” contest, which turned out to be “plumber”.  And yes, we’re just going to let that one go without comment.  The prize was a life-drawing book The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study by Kimon Nicolaides donated to us by one of our awesome and regular art monkeys, Kurt Aspland.

The prizes for the third contest, donated by Atomic Books, were Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austin and Seth Grahame-Smith and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austin and Ben H. Winters.  The contest was “What do you think the cover will look like for the next classic with monsters added?” which is why Elle has a rattlesnake tale in the second sketch.

Here’s a few of Brian Dugan’s sketches—be sure to check out his gallery to see more.

He took home Pride and Prejudice and Zombies with that “Canterbury Tales from the Crypt” sketch, too. 🙂

The sketch above was from an earlier contest, in which we asked our artists, “What’s the most inappropriate setting for a burlesque performer?”, the prize of which was a signed copy or Ragnar’s Symptomatica from Baby Tattoo Books.

Here’s a couple more photos of lovely Elle before we wrap everything up…

Don’t forget, Elle Devene and the rest of Gilded Lily Burlesque will be performing at Load of Fun Halloween night.  Don’t worry, we’ll remind you as it gets closer. 🙂

Our next session is Sept. 28th, 7 o’clock (doors at 6) at the Windup Space,  with Viola Vixen—all the way from Brisbane, Australia . . . she’s in the States for the NYC Burlesque Festival and is coming all the way down here for the evening just to pose for you.

And, just between you and us, you should know how cool our own Viola is—that is, Viola Van Wilde of Gilded Lily Burlesque—she’s graciously putting up Viola Vixen for the night, because, well, she’s just cool like that.  Don’t tell her we said that though, we don’t want her to know we think she’s that awesome because we have, you know, our own cool image and whatnot to maintain… ;-p

See you on Monday!

Sketch backlog bonanza!

So, I promised to post a bunch of sketches that didn’t make it into the appropriate session recap for whatever reason, and here they are–a week later than promised, but better late than never, I say. Which is why we still will take any sketches you finally get around to scanning and sending to us, even if it’s from a session from last November. And then we’ll post them four months after that, and everyone can reminisce or something . . .

Anyhoo, first up–a lovely sketch of Sable Sin Cyr from the April 27 session, by Andrew Spangler:

sable_syn_cyr

Andrew was, technically, the first to submit his sketches of Sable for this session (and sadly, only one of two that did… [sigh]), but I only fished his email out of the spam folder a couple weeks ago. Dunno how the hell it got there, but I’m sure glad that I eventually did check the folder for non-spam items. Bad, bad Alexis.

Next, here’s a sketch of  Viola Van Wilde from our first anniversary session on June 8, created by none other than our generous sponsor, Don Sinish from Artist & Craftsman Supply (which is just down and across the street from our new venue, Windup Space, on North Ave.):

And, here’s a whole slew of sketches from Chip Molter, who sent these in a whole big batch. First up, a drawing of Bambi Galore, from the March 9 session:

Then, of Lena Grove, from the March 23 session:

Love this Munny contest entry featuring Little Luna, from the April 13 session:

ChipMolter_LittleLuna_Contest

For those of you who weren’t at our sessions during which we were giving away mini Munnies from Atomic Books, artists competed for these awesome DIY vinyl toys by incorporating a Munny into their drawings of the model. Each mini Munny comes with a surprise accessory–anything ranging from a cell phone to a protest sign.

Next, sketches of LiiLii Lipstick, from our May 11 session:

And my absolute favorite of Chip’s drawings, from the “best depiction of Capt. Kirk hitting on LiiLii” contest, which I’m fairly certain he won:

And that’s it for now! Don’t forget–tonight’s our first session at the Windup Space (12 W. North Ave., at the corner of North and Charles)! The lovely Lucille Lingerhans von Spankenstein will be on hand to provide you with some sassy inspiration, and we’ll be giving away more fantastic prizes! Drawing starts at 7 p.m., but show up early to get a good seat and check out the awesome work in the Vs. show, still up till the end of the month. And remember, we’re now an 18 & over event. See you tonight!

Photos from Viola Van Wilde’s Session!

IMG_3671-1

That is easily my favorite photo. 🙂

Viola Van Wilde of Gilded Lily Burlesque broke many hearts, pacemakers, and pencils on Monday, June 8th, which was our one-year anniversary session. Can you believe it’s been one year, that next Monday, June 22nd, will be the TWENTIETH session of Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore?

Mama-mia!

I hope you were there, because our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books provided some SERIOUS prizes to win during the drawing contests. Fancy-pancy art books, steel portfolio cases, and shots were RAINING out of the skies! Super thanks to Viola Van Wilde, our sponsors, Dionysus, Jeff for taking photos, and Lindsay, Bill’s girlfriend, who came by on his birthday (yes, Bill shares his birthday with Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore) to judge a contest for us.

Anyway, photos!

Tell me that’s not a brave pose to hold. 🙂

Telling you folks, if you can, get there 15 minutes early to get a seat. We weren’t even able to sit down. 🙂

Our first contest was, of course, the “draw with your non-dominant” hand contest (for two shots, cause obviously you’re too damn sober if you’re able to win a contest while drawing with the wrong hand). The second, in honor of Bill’s birthday, was “What does Bill’s girlfriend Lindsay REALLY think goes on at Dr. Sketchy’s?”–judged by none other than Lindsay herself since she and Bill had stopped by even though he wasn’t supposed to.

Some of the entries were DIRTY. Please, please, please send them in. 🙂 All we’ve got is this one pretty photo snapped by Jeff.

IMG_3665-1

If you’ve got one of the sketches that made poor Lindsay gasp, PLEASE email them in.

Anyways…

IMG_3679-1

Those have to be the craziest pasties ever. The third contest was “Where did Viola get the feathers for her pasties?” for one of the two Artist & Craftsman Supply portfolio cases.

Here are two sketches from Brian Dugan . . . the first one is his winning entry for this contest.

[Check out the rest of Brian’s drawings from this session here. If I remember correctly, he’s also the only one who sent us sketches from Viola’s sesison in November, which you can see here. –Alexis]

Here are some sketches from other folks that aren’t contest related . . .

Some drawings from Athesdan . . .

Hmmm. Actually that one was probably from that contest too. 🙂

Oh, and here’s the lucky winner of the giant case from Artist & Craftsman Supply, which we determined by raffle….I don’t think she believed us at first…

IMG_3689-1

The first 25 folks got a free comic from Atomic Books as well, and another lucky soul won the postcard book of Isabel Samara’s On Tender Hooks after proving their prowess with a pencil for the best incorporation of a pop icon.

IMG_0979

Someone also won a copy of Gary Baseman’s My Hunger for Venison from our Baby Tattoo Books stash (top center)–we’ll be giving away another one of these books below on Monday….

And . . . I think that’s it?

Sugar Ann Spice this Monday, June 22nd, Dionysus, at 7 o’clock! Scroll down for info on her burlesque show at Ottobar on Saturday! Viola Van Wilde, if you’re reading this, I have an email from a lawyer that says you gave his poor client a stroke and we need to get in touch with you. Don’t call though, we think the phones are tapped.
