Johnny Blazes next Monday!

(Photo : (c) 2009 jmjfoto.com.)

Hey everyone!

Well, Aaron and I have just returned, fairly exhausted but inspired, from SketchyCon, the annual meeting where Dr. Sketchy’s directors (like us) from around the world get together to plot things like bigger and better Dr. Sketchy’s events, how to get more free stuff for you guys, and world domination.

Along with some new ideas we hope to try out in the future, we’ve brought back the Dr. Sketchy’s Traveling Sketchbook. This is a sketchbook that will be gradually filled with art and mementos from each branch–and, our branch will be the first to make its mark in this worldwide Dr. Sketchy’s project. We’ll need to send it to the next branch on the list pretty quickly, so your one chance to contribute to the sketchbook will be at our next session:

Monday, May 10
Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore featuring Johnny Blazes
doors open at 6 p.m., drawing starts at 7 p.m.
The Windup Space
$8 at the door
18+ to draw, 21+ to drink

The fantastic gender-bending, tongue-in-cheek performer, Johnny Blazes, will down from Boston to be our vaudvillian muse for the evening! Don’t miss this session–Johnny’s been a huge hit at every Dr. Sketchy’s branch that’s had hir, and we’re thrilled to be included in hir current tour!

As always, doors open at 6 and drawing starts at 7–and seriously, show up early to get a good seat. We’ll have more crazy drawing contests in which we’ll be giving away more prizes from Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books!

Johnny will also have two other events this weekend: on Friday, a performance workshop entitledTransforming Text, and on Saturday, wo(n)man show, an evening-long performance that blends cabaret arts with theater to create a charming semi-narrative series of vignettes–both at the Copycat Annex (419 E. Oliver St.). Get the details on both events here (and while you’re at Facebook, you might as well RSVP for Monday’s session here).

Also this weekend: Jen Swanson, our occasional official photographer, will have a show of her work at the Ottobar (2549 N. Howard St.), opening this Friday!  The rest of the calendar for about 2 months has been updated too, so check it out.

And, thanks to everyone who came out to draw the delectable Miss Cherry Delight! We’ll have the session recap up on the blog this weekend, so please send us your sketches of Cherry this week. Scan them in, take a photo, email, Twitpic (@DrSketchysBmore), post them on Facebook—whatever you need to do to get the images to us works.

Lastly, we’ll be hanging our very first Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore art show in just a month from now. So, folks, it’s time to seriously get some work together to submit at the end of this month for the show . . . can’t wait to see everyone’s work hanging up at the Windup Space!

Have fun, and see you Monday!

“She’s dead . . . wrapped in plastic.”

April 12th’s special Twin Peaks themed session with Viola Van Wilde of Gilded Lily Burlesque was EASILY one of the best sessions we’ve ever had.  You probably don’t know this, but this session has been planned for over a year.  When we first moved to the WindUp Space and were discussing the ins and outs with Russell, one of the first things he said was, “Hey, uh, is there a chance you could do a Twin Peaks themed session next year when we do our Lynchfest?  Ummm, have you seen Twin Peaks?”

Oh, little did he know.  If you’ve not seen Twin Peaks, you should.  Yes, it’s obscure, but basically, Twin Peaks was the Lost, Firefly, or BSG of its era.  I’m not going to belabor the point, but if you’re looking for a good yarn, Google it, you can watch it online for free with a little digging.

Anyways…we had donuts and some “damn good cherry pie” from Fenwick Bakery!

To be honest, we came pretty close to eating all of them before any of you showed up.  We’re good, moral, upstanding folks, though, so, err, we didn’t.

Well, we ate a few.

(This Monday though is going to be even sweeter….Sweet Sin Bakery is sponsoring Miss Cherry Delight’s session with free cupcakes!  Don’t be late, they’ll go fast.)

In any case, take a gander at sexy Log Lady, Viola Van Wilde.

FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper: “Who’s the lady with the log?”

Sheriff Harry S. Truman: “We call her the log lady.”

Log Lady:  “One day my log will have something to say about this.”

Kerry Brady

Log Lady: “Dark. Laughing. The owls were flying. Many things were blocked.”

(Well, in this case, the owls were blocking two things. Otherwise, we’d all get arrested.)

The Giant: “The owls are not what they seem.”

BTW, those have to be the coolest pasties ever.  (Or, as Russell said, “Nice hooters!”)

Viola’s next outfit was the sexy Audrey Horne.  Not only was she holding an amazing pose, but while doing so, she secretly tied the stem of a maraschino cherry into knot, which is how Audrey was able to infiltrate the bordello, One Eyed Jack’s, in Twin Peaks.

Our first contest was the opposite hand contest, where if you’re left handed you draw with your right, and if you’re right right handed you draw with your left, and if you’re ambidextrous you should . . . I don’t know, email me some jokes, cause, I’m running out of clever things to say in this portion.  The two winners got some sort of mystery concoction from Russell.  Lord knows what was in it.

Pete Martell, upon finding the murdered Laura Palmer in the opening scene of Twin Peaks: “She’s dead . . . wrapped in plastic.”

Special thanks to Brian K. who was thoroughly and appropriately disturbing as Bob for a pose or two. 🙂

The next contest was, “What other things are wrapped in plastic?” with the prize being a sketchbook from Artist & Craftsman Supply which is at the corner of Howard and North, basically just across the street, which is pretty damn convenient if you need some last-minute art supplies.

Next up was the artist’s best incorporation of “Fire, walk with me”, the quintessential phrase/key to all of Twin Peaks.

The prize was a Mini-Munny from Atomic Books, on the corner of Falls Rd and the Avenue in Hampden.

BTW, this is a good time to mention that you’ve got about a week left to check out what some local artists have created from these DIY vinyl dolls in Vinylmore 3 : Vinylmore, Munnyland at Atomic Books.  You can see photos of some pieces from this and past shows here, but really, you should see them in person, so don’t miss it.

And last up was the artist’s incorporation of “What’s the next TV series we may be paying homage to 20 years from now?”  The prize was Obscene Interiors by Justin Jorgenson from Baby Tattoo Books.  We didn’t get any of those sketches in the mail this time, so you’ll just have to imagine those.

Special thanks to Viola Van Wilde and Brian K. for seriously going above and beyond for this session!  Big thanks as well to our generous sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books.  Thanks to Bill for doing door and filming for the Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore documentary, to Jeff for taking all the amazing photos you see above, and to Russell for helping everyone get sloshed. And thanks to everyone who came out, Peaks geeks and otherwise!

Tonight, April 26th, is a super-duper special session with Miss Cherry Delight, Coney Island’s burlesque confection, who is coming down to Charm City for your drawing pleasure . . . not only that, but there will be free cupcakes from Sweet Sin Bakery!

The flyer is by Alexis, and that amazing photo is by Sherri O’Connor.  Check out the rest of her stunning work.

Oh, keep in mind the door charge is now $8 instead of $7 . . . after two years we finally had to raise it.  Free cupcakes from Sweet Sin Bakery though and Cherry Delight?  What could you possibly be doing on a Monday night that could be better than that?

G40: The Summit with Sugar Ann Spice and L’il Dutch

On March 12, fresh from our session with Nori Zay, we rolled down to G40:The Summit, Art Whino‘s gigantic art show to bring a special session Dr. Sketchy’s session to Crystal City, just a stone’s throw from the capital.

G40: The Summit was a dynamic contemporary art exhibition featuring curated works from artists around the world on display for the entire month of March, featuring musical and visual performances, lectures, live painting and, well, a lot more.  (BTW, I cribbed some of that sentence from their promotional material. Don’t tell.)  It was pretty amazing, and honestly, we had to go back the next weekend just to finish seeing all of it.

Here’s a little bit more of their promotional material, just so you can see the scope…

The mission of G40: The Summit is to bring the leaders of the New Brow genre together in Crystal City, VA in an effort to explore, discuss and grow this movement. G-40: The Summit will be a culmination of ideas and processes, brought together and highlighted by region and style, creating, for the first time, a full cross examination of this genre.

Floors:

1 – Show information / performance area / mixed use
5 – New York metro area artists
6 – All Encompassing
7 – California artists
8 – Washington DC metro area artists

Pretty amazing stuff.

In any case, we all got off work a little early, loaded Bill’s car up with sketchpads and lights, and set off for DC.

And then sat in Baltimore-DC traffic for three hours.

Having originally planned to get there two hours before showtime, we arrived with a scant 45 minutes to prepare.  Thankfully, Art Whino’s Shane and Rob helped us sort out the seating and lights, and the lovely Sugar Ann Spice and L’il Dutch were ready to go.

There were a couple awesome DJs spinning tunes over the course of the night; DJ Chris Instrument covered the first hour, with Nappy Riddem, featuring Rex Riddem and Mustabar, covering the last two, and putting on a pretty kick-ass performance afterward—impressive enough that we, Sugar, and L’il Dutch all bought copies of their CDs.

Our first contest was the opposite hand contest, where [takes a deep breath] if you’re right-handed you draw with your left, if you’re left-handed you draw with your right, and if you’re ambidextrous you should be off juggling somewhere or something and have no business drawing.  The two freakishly-talented artists who won this contest were sent to the bar for free drinks that we hoped would help level the playing field for the rest of the night.

Being that the title of the exhibition was somewhat a play on the heavily-protested G20 summit, the second contest was the best incorporation of whatever sort of protestors might show up for G40.  The prize was a ticket for two to the Dutch Oven Burlesque’s second anniversary show at the Palace of Wonders the very next weekend, courtesy of L’il Dutch herself.

The third contest was the best incorporation of a political scandal, with the prize being Miss Mindy’s Sassy Paper Doll Bonanza from Baby Tattoo Books. BTW, check out Sugar Ann Spice’s awesome strawberry luchador mask:

Elstabo (the winner)

Special thanks to Sugar Ann Spice and L’il Dutch for being amazing and honestly inspiring some of the best drawings we’ve ever seen; thanks as well to Shane Pomajambo who put together such an amazing exhibition and who was kind enough to invite us down; thanks to Rob for climbing precariously on makeshift ladders to fix the lights; to DJ Chris Instrument and Nappy Riddem for the great music, thanks to Bill for driving us down and back, Jeff for the great photography you see above, and last but not least all the amazing people who showed up, most of whom had never before been to a Dr. Sketchy’s in their lives.

Our next Dr. Sketchy’s will be April 12 at the Windup Space with Viola Van Wilde of Gilded Lily Burlesque, in a special Twin Peaks themed session to coincide with the Windup Space’s Lynchfest on April 10!
