Atomic Books, Maria Bella, and the new flyer.

Monday, Sept 22, from 7 to 10 is the next Dr. Sketchy’s…Maria Bella of Gilded Lily Burlesque is going to be our fabulous model, so make sure to remember your contacts.  Jay Calvert took the photo above btw, and Alexis did the flyer design.

Not only that, NOT ONLY THAT, but Atomic Books is our first official sponsor and are helping us out with the prizes this time around, so, if I was you, I’d start putting some thought right now into how I was going to cheat and this time around.

No, Bill, you’re not eligible.

(If you didn’t know, Atomic Books actually hosted the national Dr. Sketchy’s tour when it came through Baltimore last year.)

Atomic Books is having their 16th Anniversary party at the store on Oct 3rd…there’s going to be a ton of comics people and bands.  Check it out.

Umm….what else….oh, we’ll have photos from the last session up in a few days (our photographer has been on a bender or something and isn’t returning phone calls because he thinks we’re the bar).

Oh, and I’m watching the news while I type this…..you know those new trash cans all over Baltimore?  Apparently they cost $600 a pop.  See, not only does Dr. Sketchy’s keep your drawing skills honed to a razor’s edge and molest your liver twice a month, we keep you IN THE KNOW.

Some people suck.

Portland of all places?  Really?

Here’s an email Molly Crabapple forwarded to us today….not having health insurance sucks.

Hi Molly,

We’ve had a pretty upsetting event happen this past weekend here in Portland–my September model was attacked. Two men approached him around midnight on Friday, and started saying homophobic slurs to him, and then proceeded to beat him enough to concuss him and cause bleeding of the brain. You can read more about it here: http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/032723.html

This is, of course, very scary and outrageous. Already, local Portland queers and artists alike have rallied around what happened, and are doing their best to organize and educate, and the police are searching for the attackers.

A close friend of our model has created a website — healportland.com * — to let people know about our model’s status, donate money (since he has no healthcare), and leave well-wishing messages. I was wondering if it would be possible to send this out to the Sketchy’s list, so we could, at minimum, let our art community know what has happened.

Thanks,
Katie

(*broken link now fixed–sorry ’bout that)

Next session Sept 8th…

That’s next Monday, folks! Come down to Dionysus for a beer and draw the lovely Little Luna of the Gilded Lily Burlesque. You might win a snazzy prize. . .

. . . just like Meredith–the talented illustrator and designer of our current flyer–did last session.  She won a shiny new Moleskine sketchbook for her awesome depiction of Nicolette le Faye (times two!) fending off a caveman.  You, too, can walk away next Monday night with a cool prize–or at least an awesome, wine-induced buzz and a bunch of fun sketches.

In case you haven’t heard, Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore will now have sessions every 2nd and 4th Monday of each month–so now you can get your cure for a nasty case of the Mondays twice a month!

And yes, the cover charge is now $7.  But, if you send us a sketch from any of our past three sessions to be included in our online gallery, you can still get in for just $5 on the 8th.  Please include your name as you’d like to have it appear in the gallery, and so that we know who doesn’t have to give us the two extra bucks.  So don’t be shy–send us your sketches! (And lots of thanks to the two artists who already sent us their work.)
