Dr. Sketchy’s art show: Call for Entries! Next session: Little Luna, May 24th!

We will be accepting Dr. Sketchy’s sketches (or Dr. Sketchy’s-inspired finished pieces) at our next session on the 24th!

Things to consider for this show :

–Work must be ready to hang.  This is an honest-to-goodness show, so we’re not tacking any torn-out sketchbook pages to the walls, folks. We recommend checking out the stock of frames at Artist & Craftsman Supply, just down the street from the Windup Space on North and Howard.

–The show will be installed May 31-June 1, so we’re hoping to get the majority of work on the 24th. If you need to drop off work after then, bring your work to the Windup Space between 5 and 8 pm through May 30 whenever they’re open (check out their calendar at www.thewindupspace.com).

–Please attach one entry form to each work submitted. We’ll have copies of these forms at the next session, but if you want a form to print out at home, email us and we’ll send it to you.

A note on the back of each piece with the following information will also work, as long as you include the following: your name, your contact information, the title of the piece, medium used, and the price of your piece if you’re interested in selling your work (please note that the Windup Space would take a 10% commission).

–We’re hoping to hang this show salon-style, so feel free to submit multiple pieces:

smaller than 9″ x 12″, bring up to 6 pieces,
larger 9″ x 12″ but smaller than 18″ x 24″, 2-4 pieces,
18″ x24″ or larger, bring 1-2

We’ll return anything that does not fit right back to you after installation.

–The show will be up through the end of July. That’s two months–including the weekend of Artscape, so this is a fantastic opportunity to be in a group art show that will be seen by tons of people.

–Also, we’re sharing the exhibit with some gorgeous portraits of burlesque performers (including some of your models) by J.M. Giordano, a really awesome Baltimore-based photographer (and publisher of Gutter Magazine) whose work has been in the Citypaper and the Urbanite.

–The opening will be June 9 (which happens to be the day after our 2nd anniversary), so mark your calendars!

We’ll see you next Monday, when we’ll have the lovely Little Luna of Gilded Lily Burlesque modeling for us! We know a lot of you have been looking forward to drawing her, especially after her originally scheduled session in February was taken out by Snowmageddon, so don’t miss it!

See you (and your framed work) on the 24th!

A scrumptulescent serving of Miss Cherry Delight!

Miss Cherry Delight, delicious cupcakes from Sweet Sin Bakery, and whip-cracking?

If you didn’t get a sugar rush, your glucose meter is broke.

Look at those cupcakes. Just look at them. It was all I could do not to lick every single one and tell the rest of you to go to hell, lock myself in the Windup and sob quietly over a couple dozen gluten-free cupcakes and a case of Natty-Boh. To be honest with you, and please keep this to yourself, I DID suggest this and promptly got shanked by Alexis.

Lesson? Alexis loves you more than cupcakes, and sadly, I do not.

Cherry, though, was able to balance both.

. . . and then it was time for Cherry Delight to death-defying whip demonstration.  I’m not sure how someone could have been killed from it, BUT THEY COULD HAVE.

Our first contest, as usual, was the opposite hand drawing contest, where if you’re right-handed you draw with your left, and if you’re left-handed you draw with your right, and if you’re ambidextrous you should keep quiet unless you want to get egged.  The prize was a “OhmygodwhatdidRusselljustputinthatthing??” drink from the bar for thew two illustrious winners.

After that, more of the delicious Miss Cherry Dee . . .

Next up was the BOOBQUAKE contest. I’m sure you already knew, but if you didn’t, Monday was officially Boobquake Day. What does that mean? Well, apparently some idiot Iranian cleric blamed all the world’s earthquakes on women around the world showing too much cleavage. As a response, women around the world decided to show as much cleavage as possible in order to disprove his ridiculous claim.

[clears throat]  Unfortunately, there WAS an earthquake.  Err, whoops.

Anyways (sorry Taiwan!) the winner received a Uncle Dick’s famously Kinky, Hanky-Panky-Spanky Kit from Artist & Craftsman Supply just across the street at the corner of North and Howard.  I thought this was pretty amusing considering the contest.

Third up to bat was the random now contest where the crowd shouts out random nouns until Alexis hears something amusing enough to base a contest around.  A flurry of cries were flung out, the last of which was a shout of “Smurfs!” which suspicious sounded as if it came from the direction of the bar.  (I’m pretty sure Russell set us up, folks.)

As soon as the pose began Windup’s sound system belted out the Smurf song . . . Russell’s probably been waiting years to use that.

The prize was a Mini-Munny from Atomic Books in Hampden on the corner of the Avenue and Falls.  What’s a Mini-Munny?  Well, it’s a DIY vinyl toy that looks like this :

They’re basically crack for crafty types.

(If you know who drew this, email us.)

(Ditto for this one.)

The last contest of the evening was the best incorporation of Coney Island in your drawing with the prize being Miss Mindy’s Sassy Paper Doll Bonanza from Baby Tattoo Books, who’s owner also runs the LA branch of Dr. Sketchy’s.

And with that, the evening was sadly over.  The cupcake boxes were forlornly empty (they actually vanished pretty damn fast), Cherry’s ride had arrived, and the trek back to Normalsville awaited.

We would like to thank first and foremost the delectable Miss Cherry Delight for traveling all the way from Coney Island to pose for our drawing pleasure; our fetching sponsors Sweet Sin Bakery, Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo books for donating cupcakes and prizes for your . . .ummm . . . cupcaking and prizing pleasure;  to Russell for slinging booze, DJing, and having such a cool bar; Bill for working on the Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore documentary which is coming along pretty damn nicely; Jeff for the amazing photos you see above;  and of course all of you who came out and made Cherry feel welcome. 🙂

Our next session is Monday, May 10th, only days away, with Johnny Blazes!

Not only that, but we have the Official Traveling Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Sketchbook, which we picked up this past weekend in New York at SketchyCon! Monday will be your one chance to leave your mark in this Sketchworld-wide project before we ship it off to Chicago, so don’t miss it!

Hey everyone!

Well, Aaron and I have just returned, fairly exhausted but inspired, from SketchyCon, the annual meeting where Dr. Sketchy’s directors (like us) from around the world get together to plot things like bigger and better Dr. Sketchy’s events, how to get more free stuff for you guys, and world domination.

Along with some new ideas we hope to try out in the future, we’ve brought back the Dr. Sketchy’s Traveling Sketchbook. This is a sketchbook that will be gradually filled with art and mementos from each branch–and, our branch will be the first to make its mark in this worldwide Dr. Sketchy’s project. We’ll need to send it to the next branch on the list pretty quickly, so your one chance to contribute to the sketchbook will be at our next session:

Monday, May 10
Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore featuring Johnny Blazes
doors open at 6 p.m., drawing starts at 7 p.m.
The Windup Space
$8 at the door
18+ to draw, 21+ to drink

The fantastic gender-bending, tongue-in-cheek performer, Johnny Blazes, will down from Boston to be our vaudvillian muse for the evening! Don’t miss this session–Johnny’s been a huge hit at every Dr. Sketchy’s branch that’s had hir, and we’re thrilled to be included in hir current tour!

As always, doors open at 6 and drawing starts at 7–and seriously, show up early to get a good seat. We’ll have more crazy drawing contests in which we’ll be giving away more prizes from Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books!

Johnny will also have two other events this weekend: on Friday, a performance workshop entitledTransforming Text, and on Saturday, wo(n)man show, an evening-long performance that blends cabaret arts with theater to create a charming semi-narrative series of vignettes–both at the Copycat Annex (419 E. Oliver St.). Get the details on both events here (and while you’re at Facebook, you might as well RSVP for Monday’s session here).

Also this weekend: Jen Swanson, our occasional official photographer, will have a show of her work at the Ottobar (2549 N. Howard St.), opening this Friday!  The rest of the calendar for about 2 months has been updated too, so check it out.

And, thanks to everyone who came out to draw the delectable Miss Cherry Delight! We’ll have the session recap up on the blog this weekend, so please send us your sketches of Cherry this week. Scan them in, take a photo, email, Twitpic (@DrSketchysBmore), post them on Facebook—whatever you need to do to get the images to us works.

Lastly, we’ll be hanging our very first Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore art show in just a month from now. So, folks, it’s time to seriously get some work together to submit at the end of this month for the show . . . can’t wait to see everyone’s work hanging up at the Windup Space!

Have fun, and see you Monday!

–Alexis and Aaron
