KiKi Allure was the last model of 2012 and she was absolutely amazing. I’d never heard “Let’s Have A KiKi” by the Scissor Sisters before, but it might be one of my favorite songs now. Well, this month anyway. I wanted to use it in the video below, but figured it wasn’t worth getting us sued out of existence.
We had contests with prizes from our sponsors Atomic Books and Dupenny. I don’t know if you know this, but Atomic Books has been our sponsor for four years, which is almost from the very beginning. This was their last session sponsoring Dr. Sketchy’s and I just wanted to say it’s been an honor working with them, not only because they’re amazing people, but because we consider it a feather in our cap to be sponsored by what, in our opinion, might very well be the best indie bookstore in the country. If you haven’t visited them yet (they’re on the corner of Falls Rd and the Avenue in Hampden), you should. It’s like a toy store for grown-ups and is about as addictive as heroin.
Dupenny was a new sponsor for this session, and donated a snazzy burlesque-themed plate for us to give away as a prize. They design and produce exquisite wallpaper, beautiful homewares and fine ceramics with a refreshing twist. You should check them out. I think we’re going to get some coffee mugs. 🙂
This was also our last Saturday session for the foreseeable future. For most of our 4 1/2 years of doing Sketchy’s, we’ve traditionally had our sessions on Monday evening, the thinking being that there weren’t many other events to compete with and folks were often free. Over the years, a lot of interest was expressed in doing a Saturday afternoon session, so we gave it a shot for a few months. Unfortunately, the attendance just wasn’t as good as Monday with all the various interesting things going on in Baltimore on a Saturday afternoon, like, umm, hangovers and whatnot. Not only that, but Sketchy’s take so much time to set up and take down, that in the end, it basically equated to everyone involved only getting one day off that week, which made pastimes like going to the bookie, finding misplaced cars from Friday’s late night shenanigans, and hunting rabid nutria along backstreets of Fells with .357’s and a bottle of Jack EXTREMELY difficult.
Not impossible, but difficult.
Also, no more Saturday sessions unless there’s a special event going on that calls for it. We’re also reducing our sessions to once a month in 2013, versus the previous twice a month format. An individual session requires a lot of work on the front and backends to put on, to the point where we were finding it impossible to find time to improve things. Basically, our time was going to keeping the machine running with nothing to spare to make each individual session better and better. Plus, Alexis & I are getting married this year, and we need time to plan that monster out. 🙂
So, no more Saturdays, and only once a month from here on out, unless something special comes along (it always does).
Special thanks to KiKi Allure for being our artistic muse of the evening, thanks to our sponsors Atomic Books & Dupenny, Zack & Russell of the Windup Space, Maeve for holding down the door and helping set up and take down, Alexis for hosting; and to all you folks who showed up to draw.
Fantastic poses, great props, and amazing hair? What better escape from a rainy afternoon of Artscape could you ask for than drawing the stunning Valeria Voxx of Black Tassel Boolesque?
This was the first Dr. Sketchy’s during Artscape we’ve ever done—and though we were fully prepared to spend the afternoon drinking at the Windup bar with Valeria, a few crickets, and one heat-exhausted tourist in a motorized wheelchair, that apparently wasn’t in the cards. We didn’t know if it’d be a ghost town or if it’d be slammed. Not only was it successful (honestly, who doesn’t want to draw Valeria?), but we got to see all sorts of folks we haven’t seen at Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore in a long time because of conflicting Monday night class schedules, Charm City Roller Girl practices, and underwater basket-weaving tournaments.
Now we’re toying with the idea of switching to a “one Monday and one Saturday” a month schedule? Is that something you’d be interested in? If so, you should pipe up in the comments below. We’re definitely thinking about it.
This session was also our very last session with Styger, our helper door person—who, because of some asshats playing games with other people’s money and destroying a perfectly nice game company, is moving on to the brighter shores of San Francisco. She better come visit.
If there’s any silver lining in that whole clusterfuck, it’s Valeria Voxx herself, who will be taking the torch from Styger to help keep the Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore boat afloat. Hot. Damn.
We don’t have as many photos this time around, our regular photographer Jeff wasn’t able to make this particular session (he robs banks on Saturdays), but Alexis was able to get a few pics snapped in between running on and off the stage. Check them out below.
For this special Artscape session the good folks at Atomic Books provided us with the latest issues of Bachelor Pad and Juxtapoz AND a $20 gift card to give away as prizes to the various drawing contests. (The contests were the best incorporation of crash test dummies and the best incorporation of a Super Mario villain.) If you’ve not been to Atomic Books before, you should—it’s the best damn independent book store / comic book shop in the country.
Thank you to Valeria Voxx for doing an absolutely amazing job posing for our Artscape session; thanks to Atomic Books, our wonderful sponsor; thanks to Holly for slinging drinks; thanks to Russell for letting us use the Windup Space; and HUMONGOUS thanks to Styger for helping me push around furniture and man the door not just this time, but for the last year and change—San Francisco is a lucky city to get her; and finally, thanks to Alexis for emceeing the circus.
Thanks as well to Kat Parker, Clarice Jones, Fred Oakes, Katrina Schmidt, and Sheila England.
Next session is Monday, August 13th with Mourna Handful of Black Tassel Boolesque! Doors at 6, start at 7! If you’re coming, let us know on the Facebook page. Advance tickets are on sale till midnight of the 12th for $8—$10 at the door.
(Thanks to Cheryl Fair for the gorgeous photo of Mourna Handful above; if you’re ever wanting some stunning photos of your own, you should definitely contact Cheryl and schedule a shoot!)
This was Cherokee Rose’s first session posing for Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore, though not her first for Dr. Sketchy’s. She certainly knew what she was doing.
Understandably, new folks always make us nervous. What if they get lost coming to the Windup? What if they’re a robot built by a rival Dr. Sketchy’s branch intent on a hostile takeover? What if the model doesn’t even exist and we’re being pranked by a T-Rex with an internet connection and someone willing to type for it?* <– [see comments]
It can be stressful.
Cherokee was amazing – at no point did she transform into a boombox and try to steal our energon cubes nor did anyone get eaten. Just a whole lot of Super Sexy.
We had a bunch of drawing contests, with one lucky winner getting the latest issue of Retro Lovely from Atomic Books, another getting Autumn’s Come Undone by Shag from Baby Tattoo Books, and two poor souls getting some mystery concoction from Russell behind the bar.
Thank you to Craig Hankin, Kat Parker, Fred Oakes, Hallsi Rose Killian, Jennifer A Stark, John Schloman, and Tim Kelly, who all sent in drawings, which you can see in the gallery below.
Super duper thanks to Cherokee Rose for being our muse that evening; thanks to our sponsors Atomic Books and Baby Tattoo Books; thanks to Russell for slinging booze and tunes; thanks to Jeff for the photos you see above; thanks to Styger for helping me shove furniture around and run the door; and thanks to Alexis for holding the mic down.
Our next session is SATURDAY, July 21st, at the Windup during Artscape with Valeria Voxx! It’s a special two hour session with a “pay what you want” at the door, minimum of a dollar. There’ll be cold beer, cold air conditioning, and some great drawing. You should come.
