Roma Mafia, the Rapture, Butterflies, and Labyrinth.

Wow, the camera really likes Roma Mafia of Sticky Buns Burlesque.  Like, a lot.  The photos always look great, but this batch looks especially amazing.  Our photographer Jeff was in some sort of photographic zen-like zone and Roma was a CLEAR violation of Russell’s “don’t set fire to my stage” rule that he gets so strangely upset over.  (As a side note, Roma kicked ass Saturday night too along with Sticky Buns Burlesque and Gilded Lily Burlesque at the Planned Parenthood Benefit at Area 405.  Hope you went; you pretty much couldn’t throw a rock without hitting someone who’s modeled for Dr. Sketchy’s before.  Don’t throw rocks though.)

Here’s the 1 & 2-minute poses.

A quick break to so everyone could powder their noses and top off drinks and it was time for the 5-minute poses, the first of which was ye ol’ opposite hand contest, where if you’re right-handed you draw with your left and if you’re left-handed you draw with your right and if you’re ambidextrous, well, you’re disqualified and probably shouldn’t be here anyway and should be at a ninja academy or something.  The two winners got mystery drinks from Russell behind the bar.

Another break and it was time for the 10-minute poses, the first of which was a contest for best incorporation of the Rapture, since that whole “End of the World” nonsense was going on around then in the news.  The winners got to choose between a Strathmore Charcoal Pad and a pocket-sized leather-bound sketchbook from Artist & Craftsman Supply down the street on the corner of Howard and North.

The first 20-minute contest was best incorporation of the butterfly effect or Chaos Theory since it was Edward Lorenz’s birthday, the fellow who coined the term.  The prize was Rubber Duck by Karen Hsiau from Baby Tattoo Books.

The last pose of the night was best incorporation of the movie Labyrinth.  (The previous weekend Alexis and I had visited the Raleigh, NC branch of Dr. Sketchy’s, which hosted a special session at a Labyrinth-themed burlesque show.  It was pretty damn neat.)  The winners got their choice of either the latest issue of Retro Lovely or Hi Fructose and Bachelor Pad from Atomic Books on the corner of the Avenue and Falls in Hampden.

Thank you to Roma Mafia for a stunning session; thanks to our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books; thanks to Russell for slinging drinks and tunes and letting us use the Windup Space; thanks to Jeff for working his camera magic; thanks to my beard for not harming any small children, and thanks of course to Alexis for MCing.

So, when’s the next Dr. Sketchy’s?

Oh, it’s tomorrow.  Monday, June 13th.

Anything special about it?  Not really, no big deal or nuthin’, it’s just

OUR FUCKING 3 YR ANNIVERSARY!

Marla “So Cute it Hurts” Meringue of Sticky Buns Burlesque will be modeling!  Boom!  [John Stewart fist-pump]  And what’s that new logo up there?  Flying Dog Brewery?  There’ll be Raging Bitch on tap, $4 for the first pint and $2 for every pint after that – which is like, INSANE, and not only that, they’ll be giving other stuff away too!  Atomic Books, who’s been with us almost the entire 3 years has a bunch of cool stuff, Artist & Craftsman Supply loaded us up with art supplies, and Baby Tattoo Books stuff too!  And the stage is getting a makeover!  Boom!

If you think you’re coming, for God’s sake confirm on the Facebook event – doors will open at 6 with the start at 7.  Don’t be late, this really, really is the big one.

THREE YEARS!

Well, we’re back from our road trip to the Asheville Burlesque and Sideshow Festival with Maria Bella and Little Luna of Gilded Lily Burlesque and Mourna Handful – which was absolutely amazing by the way and why we’ve been relatively quiet for a week – and it’s time to catch up on all things Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore.

First off, here’s a blog post by Sagittarius Dolly about her second trip to Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore (last session with Roma Mafia).  Here’s a link to her first trip – I meant to link to her blog a week ago but got caught up with traveling nonsense.  They’re pretty neat, and if you want an impression of a Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore session not written by us, you should check ’em out.

Well, that’s it….nothing else really going on…..

OH WAIT.  Monday is our

THREE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!

Holy #$%^!

Folks…FOLKS, *this* is the big one.  We’re finally leaving the Terrible Two’s and dive head first into the Tantrum Three’s.  This is where we finally stop saying “no” and start saying “ye….” – hmm, actually, after flipping through Dr. Spock, this is apparently where we start biting.

We’ve got prizes galore from Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman, Baby Tattoo . . . AND Flying Dog beer, our brand new sponsor!  Oh hell yeah!  Here’s the Facebook event by the way – if you’re coming, let us know, it lets us know how many shots to do before we open the doors at six.

Marla “So Cute It Hurts” Meringue of Sticky Buns Burlesque, who you can see above, will be modeling for this no-holds-barred, shenanigan-infused, bring-bail-money, pinch-yourself-cause-you-got-to-be-dreaming Dr. Sketchy’s – and, well, holy bejesus, if you don’t want to draw Marla in all her glory then you need to stick corks in your ears ’cause your brain is messing up that shirt your momma bought you.

I’m telling ya, you’re not going to be able to swing a cat without smacking a good time in the face on Monday (not to mention knocking over a bunch of pencil jars, beers, and seriously irritating the cat).

Can’t wait?  Well, here’s two things that might help in the interim – Sticky Buns Burlesque is performing tonight, Wednesday, at Cazbar at 8:30, not only that, they’re performing Saturday, as is Gilded Lily Burlesque, and, well, just about everybody else at Sex. Art. Rock N Roll at Area 405 at 6 pm.  You can see Marla at both, along with tons of other folks who’ve modeled for Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore over the last 3 years.

THREE YEARS.

Peep this: Our night of nerd-dom with Ivory Twinkler!

Ivory Twinkler of Gilded Lily Burlesque has the best pasties ever.  You level-up just LOOKING at them.  That’s a whole new reason to remember up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, b, a, start.

Okay, that’s probably too much geek.  Probably five people know what I’m talking about at this point.

[thinks about it for a second]  Actually, knowing our crowd, 99% of you know exactly what I’m talking about, right?

Regardless, Ivory Twinkler brought enough science/geek-hotness cred to melt the heart of the even the crankiest engineering major.  And if one of you who wasn’t there says, “Naaa, no one’s that sexy, that’s ‘shopped.  I can tell ’cause of the pixels and ’cause I’ve seen a lot of ‘shops in my time,” I swear on all that’s sacred the back of my hand is coming for your face.

On to more photos, which were taken by our trusty photographer, Jeff Schock. We started with the 1- and 2-minute poses.

Then we had a short break to refresh drinks and it was time for the 5-minute poses and the opposite-hand drawing contest, where if you’re right-handed you draw with your left, if you’re left-handed you draw with your right, and you’re ambidextrous you should really just keep that fact to yourself.  The two winners each snagged an upside-down pineapple cake shot from Russell at the bar.

Three more 5-minute poses where the audience used whichever hand they felt was necessary.

With that, it was time for an intermission and one of the reasons we love Ivory Twinkler so much. I’m telling you folks, if you haven’t been to a Gilded Lily Burlesque show yet, you really, really should.  Here’s an itty-bity taste.  First hit’s free—the second, though . . .

Then it was time for the 10-minute poses, the second of which was the good ol’ standby ‘random noun’ contest where folks in the crowd yell out random nouns until Alexis hears something amusing.

Marshmellow peeps won out, amusing Alexis more than the mere fact that it was the day after Easter could possibly explain.

The winners, which there were a bunch of this time around, got 1 of 4 sketchpads from Artist & Craftsman Supply just across the street on the corner of North and Howard.

Huh, not sure why Kerry drew an entire box of peeps in her stomach, I mean, no one eats an entire box of peeps.  That would be craaazyy. The only thing that would be crazier would be to eat two entire boxes after a night of double-fisting birthday drinks, and we certainly don’t know anyone that insane.

Kaitlin Reid

The first 20-minute pose was another contest, this time for the best incorporation of Batman’s 72nd birthday, with the prize being a copy of the badass illustrated faux-history book Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel from Atomic Books on the corner of Falls Rd and the Avenue in Hampden.

The last 20-minute pose of the evening and last contest was in honor of Shakespeare’s birthday with the prize being Karen Hsiao’s Rubber Duck from Baby Tattoo Books.

Many thanks to Ivory Twinkler of Gilded Lily Burlesque who was absolutely amazing; thanks as well to our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books; thanks also to Russell for slinging drinks and song; Jeff for the heart-palpitating photos above; and last but not least, to Alexis for hosting this rodeo.

Next Dr. Sketchy’s is tomorrow, May 9th, with Paige Pumphrey!

If you don’t know anything about Paigey, read the blog post below this one—in any case, doors are at 6, start at 7! Drinks are a dollar off before 7, too, so don’t be late!
