Scarlett Takes Manhattan

This summer, Fugu Press is releasing Scarlett Takes Manhattan, a tale of love and corruption in the 1880’s vaudeville world, illustrated by Molly Crabapple (who founded Dr. Sketchy’s) and written by John Leavitt (who helps run Dr.S).  You can find more details at www.fugupress.com

Some big guns like it…

“With its tongue in several cheeks at once, Scarlett overheats the Victorian erotic memoir into a madly funny firepit of debauchery. Disgustingly wonderful.”

Warren Ellis, author of Crooked Little Vein, Transmetropolitan, etc.

You pretty much can’t get better accolades than that.

Some people suck.

Portland of all places?  Really?

Here’s an email Molly Crabapple forwarded to us today….not having health insurance sucks.

Hi Molly,

We’ve had a pretty upsetting event happen this past weekend here in Portland–my September model was attacked. Two men approached him around midnight on Friday, and started saying homophobic slurs to him, and then proceeded to beat him enough to concuss him and cause bleeding of the brain. You can read more about it here: http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/032723.html

This is, of course, very scary and outrageous. Already, local Portland queers and artists alike have rallied around what happened, and are doing their best to organize and educate, and the police are searching for the attackers.

A close friend of our model has created a website — healportland.com * — to let people know about our model’s status, donate money (since he has no healthcare), and leave well-wishing messages. I was wondering if it would be possible to send this out to the Sketchy’s list, so we could, at minimum, let our art community know what has happened.

Thanks,
Katie

Hey, Molly has a show in Baltimore starting tomorrow.

Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s illustrious founder, has some art included in a show starting tomorrow (Sept. 5) at the Definition Gallery on 1800 Fleet Street (which I believe is at the corner of Ann St.) It runs until Sept. 27. The opening reception is tomorrow from 7 PM to 11 PM.

From Definition’s website…

Echo [ek-oh]: a sympathetic or identical response, as to sentiments expressed.

Definition Gallery presents “A Dozen Echoes,” an inspiring ensemble of a dozen female artists from across the United States. Each artist explores the unifying circumstances of being a modern woman in the 21st century while simultaneously reflecting on women’s past roles in history and culture. The gallery selected the artists for their ability to convey these personal and universal experiences with painstaking detail. The exhibition demonstrates a mastery over a variety of mediums; from traditional glazes to contemporary photography.

Alexis and I will be there tomorrow night, so if you’re up for some art in Fells tomorrow, we’ll see ya there….
