Peep this: Our night of nerd-dom with Ivory Twinkler!

Ivory Twinkler of Gilded Lily Burlesque has the best pasties ever. You level-up just LOOKING at them. That’s a whole new reason to remember up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, b, a, start.

Okay, that’s probably too much geek. Probably five people know what I’m talking about at this point.

[thinks about it for a second] Actually, knowing our crowd, 99% of you know exactly what I’m talking about, right?

Regardless, Ivory Twinkler brought enough science/geek-hotness cred to melt the heart of the even the crankiest engineering major. And if one of you who wasn’t there says, “Naaa, no one’s that sexy, that’s ‘shopped. I can tell ’cause of the pixels and ’cause I’ve seen a lot of ‘shops in my time,” I swear on all that’s sacred the back of my hand is coming for your face.

Then we had a short break to refresh drinks and it was time for the 5-minute poses and the opposite-hand drawing contest, where if you’re right-handed you draw with your left, if you’re left-handed you draw with your right, and you’re ambidextrous you should really just keep that fact to yourself. The two winners each snagged an upside-down pineapple cake shot from Russell at the bar.

With that, it was time for an intermission and one of the reasons we love Ivory Twinkler so much. I’m telling you folks, if you haven’t been to a Gilded Lily Burlesque show yet, you really, really should. Here’s an itty-bity taste. First hit’s free—the second, though . . .

Then it was time for the 10-minute poses, the second of which was the good ol’ standby ‘random noun’ contest where folks in the crowd yell out random nouns until Alexis hears something amusing.

Marshmellow peeps won out, amusing Alexis more than the mere fact that it was the day after Easter could possibly explain.

The winners, which there were a bunch of this time around, got 1 of 4 sketchpads from Artist & Craftsman Supply just across the street on the corner of North and Howard.

Huh, not sure why Kerry drew an entire box of peeps in her stomach, I mean, no one eats an entire box of peeps. That would be craaazyy. The only thing that would be crazier would be to eat two entire boxes after a night of double-fisting birthday drinks, and we certainly don’t know anyone that insane.

The first 20-minute pose was another contest, this time for the best incorporation of Batman’s 72nd birthday, with the prize being a copy of the badass illustrated faux-history book Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel from Atomic Books on the corner of Falls Rd and the Avenue in Hampden.

The last 20-minute pose of the evening and last contest was in honor of Shakespeare’s birthday with the prize being Karen Hsiao’s Rubber Duck from Baby Tattoo Books.

Artstar session with Paigey!

I think the first time I really became aware of the Charm City Roller Girls was when I spotted this poster in the window of some bar or another I was irresponsibly drinking in. Tell me that isn’t some of the best poster/flyer work you’ve ever seen in your life. I seem to recall saying something like, “One, what’s roller derby? That looks bad-ass . . . and two, wow, who the hell drew that? I think my inner artist just got struck sober.”

Well, the Baltimore-bred, Brooklyn-based illustrator Paige Pumphrey, a.k.a. Paigey, drew that. I’m pretty sure Alexis responded, “You don’t know who Paigey is, and you don’t know what roller derby is? My God, I’m dating and running Dr. Sketchy’s with an idiot.”

After a brief jager-fueled period of crying and a lot of “No, honey, you’re not really an idiot” and “Yes, honey, I know your childhood dog died when you were five but I don’t understand what that has to do with anything right now”, I . . . well, I probably passed out. It’s a little blurry.

That was a few years ago. Since then, we met Paigey at the Baltimore Comic Con, where we bought a print of that poster to hang in our apartment and found out that she’s a regular at the Dr. Sketchy’s in NYC. Then a year later, at her art opening at Saints and Sinners here in Baltimore, we talked to her about having an Art Star session of Dr. Sketchy’s featuring her work.

And now, we’re finally having that session! Paigey will be modeling for you, her fellow artists, this Monday night at the Windup Space. As always, doors open at 6 and drawing starts at 7—and seriously, show up early to get a good seat. We’ll have crazy drawing contests with prizes from Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books.

$8 at the door, and you must be 18+ to attend, and 21+ to drink. No photography or paints, please. Visit the official Facebook event page to let us know you’re joining us, and you can use it to invite your friends, too.

A night of bombshells and bikes for Moveable Feast!

Last session was our first-ever charity benefit courtesy of Ride for the Feast’s Team Atomic for Moveable Feast, which means everything from the door and all the tips went to help feed Marylanders in need. I’ll let Jules of Team Atomic explain it since I’ll probably just flub it.

I don’t know how we got this lucky two sessions in a row, but Team Atomic showed up meaning serious business. Tons of creatively used props, innovative poses, various facial expressions—take heed, future models. The following photos are a big steel-knuckled gauntlet that just cracked your linoleum floor. Between this session and last session with the Junkyard Dolls, well, I’m worried if we can ever top them.

Oh, we can but let’s not get ahead of ourselves . . . on to the 1- and 2-minute poses!

We took a break so folks could get some delicious treats from the lovely ladies of Team Atomic / get a hand-steadying elixir / smoke / tinkle / or go outside and shoot somebody (since apparently that’s what the rest of Baltimore was up to that Monday evening), and then it was time for the 5-minute poses, the first of which was the “best non-dominant appendage drawing” contest.

As always, all contests are optional. The two winners scored fancy shots from Josh at the bar—I don’t know what they were but I did spot cherries in the bottom. That’s good, right?

A quick break to shuffle things on stage and it was time for the 10-minute poses. with the first contest being the random noun contest where the audience shouts out drunken nonsense until something strikes Alexis’s fancy, which, this go-around turned out to be “Hemingway”, with the prizes being an issue of Retro Lovely Magazine from Atomic Books in Hampden and a set of Princeton Art & Brush Company brushes from Artist & Craftsman Supply just down the street on North & Howard.

Next up was a 20-minute pose and another contest, this being the best incorporation of space flight since the 50th anniversary of human space flight was the next day. The prizes were Ragnar’s Kings of the Road from Baby Tattoo Books and a pair of stockings from What Katie Did.
