Where burlesque meets life drawing in Charm City!

Tonight! Last session till June 8th because of Memorial Day!

So, maybe our ambitious plans to have a session right on the heels of our return from SketchyCon bit us on the butt. Well, bit Alexis, at least. Last Monday was definitely rough, but thank god for our stunning muse of the evening, Sable Sin Cyr.

Not only is she jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but she can make amazing costumes–that beautiful costume she’s wearing was created entirely from scratch by Sable herself. And unfortunately Charm City is losing her talent this summer to the land of beer and cheese, where she’ll be studying costume design.

As always, special thanks to Sable, Dionysus for hosting us, our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books. Non-Special thanks to Bill for doing door and Jeff for photos (they aren’t very special, well, not in that way).

There were contests and prizes from our sponsors galore, so many in fact we actually had trouble having enough contests to distribute them all. While we drew, we listened to the Dr. Sketchy’s Old-Timey Dirty Ditties CD put together by Joe Wos of Dr. Sketchy’s Pittsburgh with design by Nicola Black of Dr. Sketchy’s Philadelphia.

One contest was based on Sable’s pose below the fifth track The Bumblebee Invaded The Nudist Colony by Billy Mitchell. You can listen to it below, though Lord knows don’t listen to it at work. 🙂 It’s hysterical. (Let me know if the link doesn’t work.)

The winning sketch of Sable’s encounter with a bee was by Brian Dugan, who won a blue Mini-Munny from Atomic Books.

Another contest was Pirates vs. Ninjas. Why? Why not. (Actually, it was because Sable was telling us about some awesome pirates vs. ninjas blog before the start of the session).

All the contestants won watercolor sets from Artist & Craftsman Supply, but Brian was on a roll and won Gris Grimly’s Wicked Nursery Rhymes from Baby Tattoo Books for his awesome drawing above. (You can see both Gris Grimly and Molly Crabapple sketch at www.sketchtheatre.com)

Here’s a few sketches by Kurt Aspland to round everything out…

Our next session is THIS MONDAY, May 8th with LiiLii Lipstick! Drawing and beer on a Monday, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Again, a big thanks to Johnny B for letting us use his awesome photo for our flyer. See you Monday!

Anyways, a bunch of folks took some really good photos and I thought you might be interested in seeing a couple.
The first night was a Dr. Sketchy’s drawing session for all the folks who run Dr. Sketchy’s but never actually get to DRAW at one. I’d be amazed if you’ve ever seen me pick up a pencil at one of our own sessions. Alexis is able to sneak a sketch in every now and then, but for the most part, it just doesn’t work too well, so this was pretty fun.

I have no idea what was going on in this next one…Molly and John obviously up to no good…

One of the drawing contests was conducted on Johnny Dallas’s front and back….apparently it took forever to scrub this stuff off the next morning.

Afterward, we went to a secret, secret after party at Sutra, a little bar covered with illustrations from the Karma Sutra (though you couldn’t really see them in the dark). All this is somewhat a haze…

The next is the “Oh my God, who’s that making out over there??!!” photo.

The next day was a screening of the Dr. Sketchy’s documentary, which will get shown in Baltimore at some point (it’s freaking hysterical), tons of skillshare seminars, screwdrivers, and some amazing cupcakes from Glittle Cupcakes.

Tell me that isn’t the most amazing loft ever. 🙂 Here’s Molly during the presentations.

Well, that’s probably enough photos. If you want to see more, check out the flickr pool.
Thanks so much to Molly Crabapple, our fearless leader, for putting this all together, and thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome . . . if I start listing names, I’m literally going to have to list EVERYONE. We had a great time and have so many ideas now we’re not quite sure what to do with all of them. 🙂
