The Devil you know…

(updated 10/27 with additional sketches)

On October 12th we had, for the drawing pleasure of all, the extraordinarily versatile Paco Fish of Gilded Lily Burlesque, host of Vive la Decadance!, organizer of Independent Practice at Load of Fun on Wednesdays, and, well, a bazillion trillion other things.  (Not only that, but his Facebook page is a pretty damn good way to find out what’s going on around town any given week if your tastes tend to veer toward vaudeville and burlesque.)

Now, prepare yourself for some sizzling shots of Paco:

We know there are those out there that are like, what, no boobies? But really, we true artists also appreciate the male form. Paco could easily have been in some painting of a religious or mythical scene by one of the old masters. (Well, if they had sequined heart pasties and gold lamé hot pants back in those days.)

The first contest of the night was the opposite hand drawing contest, where if you’re left handed you draw with your right, if you’re right handed you draw with your left, and if you’re ambidextrous you give Aaron five dollars.  We don’t have any scans from that contest, but the two winners downed a mystery shot from the bar.

BTW, all of Gilded Lily Burlesque, Paco included, will be performing this coming Saturday, Halloween night at Load of Fun from 10 to midnight.  It’s going to be an amazing show, we’re going.  Get your tickets here before they sell out.

After the show, check out the Heroes and Villians Costume Ball being thrown a block away by the Windup Space (our wonderful  home) and Atomic Books (one of our generous providers of awesome prizes). Seriously, Station North is the place to be for Halloween this year, instead of being crammed in some random Fells Point bar, getting your eye nearly poked out by some girl with fairy wings from Hot Topic, and having to plan your pee trips way before the urge even arrives because it’ll take you forever to shove past half a dozen Michael Jacksons and whatever else the hot costume of the season is, to get on that long-ass bathroom line.

Wait, where were we? Oh, drooling over Paco’s very Baroque sexiness…

From an angelic Cupid to a glam-tastic Jesus Christ, to whom MJ apparently lent his glove.

Here’s a couple sketches….the first is from Mike Hasson….he gave us a couple sketches to scan in, unfortunately a few of them were larger than our scanner, so you’ll notice some cropping.  If we get some better copies, we’ll come back later and replace them.

…and this one is from Brian Dugan….

Next was the random noun contest, in which we ask the audience to call out the first person, place, or thing that comes to mind, the most interesting of which we ask them to then incorporate into their drawings. Thus, for this session, “Best incorporation of an iPhone app,” the prize for which was Kings of the Road by Ragnar from Baby Tattoo Books.

Here’s an entry by Brian Dugan…

The third contest, since it happened to coincidentally be Aleister Crowley’s birthday, was the best interpretation of Aleister Crowley, which unfortunately diverged into a ten minute lesson on who Aleister Crowley was.

Sad, sad, sad.  (Maybe we’ve read too much Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, etc. though.)

The prize was the Color Ink Book Volume 3 by Brothers Washburn from Atomic Books, who by the way has revamped their website, which looks pretty slick.

Special thanks to Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books for being our generous sponsors and providing prizes for all of you to win.  Not only that, but thanks are owed to Russell of the Windup Space for slinging drinks, Bill for holding down the door and filming video for the eventual Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore documentary, and Jeff for the fabulous photos through out this post. And a ton of thanks, of course, for our supernaturally spectacular muse of the evening, Paco Fish!

Our next Dr. Sketchy’s is October 26th….TONIGHT with Dahlia Derriere in a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe!

Dahlia Derriere

Girls against boys.

So, something that’s been frustrating me lately: even though the attendance at our sessions is more or less evenly split between men and women—sometimes the girls actually outnumber the guys, which surprises some of our friends who assume that it’s only guys who want to draw our models—since late spring, the artists who’ve been sending us sketches have been men. Annie Wu ended that trend last month, but still, she was the lone female artist who shared her drawings with us.  What gives, ladies?

This time around, the lovely Lily Stark White has been the one woman to send us her drawings:

We also had some people find us through two blogs, both by women, so we’re going to return the favor—even if they didn’t send us their sketches themselves. 😉 (To be fair, this past session I relied too much on the reminder cards I handed out to solicit sketches from folks and forgot to actually remind everyone while on stage.) Check out Bridget (Vaughn)’s Art Blog and Kristin Nohe’s Suburbs blog for their awesome drawings of Deviana.

And, lastly, here’s a sketch of Deviana from our door guy, Bill:

bill_deviana

Obviously, Bill’s a guy, though he whines like a 4-year-old girl about how we never post his sketches, even though we link to his blog on our front page. So there you go, Bill—I ended this post about how we don’t get enough sketches from women with your unmistakeably male drawing.

Anyway—sketches. We love getting them—from everyone.

Don’t forget, we’ll have the lovely Elle Devene of Gilded Lily Burlesque posing for us this Monday night at the Windup Space—and check out Gilded Lily’s show with the Baltimore Improv Group tonight at the Creative Alliance. Hope you have your tickets already, since they’re probably selling out as I type this. Couldn’t get tickets? Then check out the Xotic fashion show at the Windup Space tonight instead.

And then there’s Hampden Fest tomorrow. Stop by Atomic Books and say hi to Benn, who’s given us a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies *and*  Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters to give away on Monday.

Oh, and 2nd Saturdays in Station North is tomorrow, too! Lots of fun—and free—performances!

Whatever you do this weekend, have fun, and see you on Monday!

Frenzy Lohan sighting at the Windup Space

IMG_4264-1

After taking a month off to get settled in at the Windup Space—and to see and do (or not, if we didn’t spend half a day waiting in a line, which was often the case) some really awesome and geeky shit at the San Diego Comic Con—Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore returned to have our first model from the Charm City Roller Girls: the lovely Frenzy Lohan of the Night Terrors and Charm City All-Stars.

First off, the short poses:

Don’t be deceived by her delicate beauty, folks. Frenzy is seriously fierce. In her last bout before this session, she took out an opponent twice her size—but ended up taking a spill herself and screwed up her knee in the process. In fact, she probably shouldn’t have taken on the following pose—and yet she did, for our contest in which we asked our talented art monkeys to illustrate the very moment that resulted in her injury.  That’s dedication, people. And remember, for this kind of hard work, we show our models our appreciation with wild applause. And with fives and tens deposited in the little red tip box. Seriously.

So here are some of the entries for the “best illustration of Frenzy taking out her opponent” contest. First up, from Paul Moscatt:

Here’s our muse showing off Mike Hasson‘s entry:

The winner of this contest took home a copy of Where Madness Reigns: The Art of Gris Grimly, which was generously given to us by Baby Tattoo Books. I think I sadistically mentioned this at the session, but just in case I didn’t, I bought a copy of this awesome book from Gris Grimly himself, who then signed it for me, at SDCC. (BTW, while I was totally selfish in my quest to get some autographed Grimly goodness, we will be giving away some other signed items in the next couple of sessions, so keep reading.)

Here’s another piece by Kurt Aspland:

And from Brian Dugan (see more of his sketches from this session here):

For her next look, Frenzy surprised us with a Davy Crockett-inspired costume—and it happened to be Davy Crockett’s birthday.

IMG_4423-1

Frenzy said she didn’t realize this; whether that was true or not, it was awesome. We were going to announce some contest that I can’t remember now—something about paparazzi and that other Lohan—but naturally, under the circumstances, we couldn’t resist asking our audience of artists to show how Davy Crockett would celebrate his birthday. So here’s Frenzy Crockett surveying the lovely crowd’s drawings:

And here’s Brian Dugan’s entry:

briandavy

(Davy Crockett, a Charm City Roller Girl, and a Beastie Boys reference all in one drawing—pretty awesome.)

By the way, the winner of this contest took home a copy of Sparrow #3: Kent Williams, generously donated by the awesome folks at Atomic Books in Hampden. And yes, I did some more gloating, since I got Kent Williams to sign his giant book of paintings for me at SDCC, too. If it’s any consolation, my bank account is still seriously hurting as a result of my geekily indulgent week in San Diego.

Anyway, back to Frenzy. Oh wait, we’re at the last photo.

But hey, there’s a bunch more sketches. First, some short sketches:

moscatt1That one above is a one-minute drawing by Paul Moscatt. He was one of the two winners of the “left-handed” (or, in more PC-terms, non-dominant hand) drawing contest, btw. If you’ve been to one of our sessions, then you know what he won—free booze. It’s our way of punishing rewarding the steadiest hands in the audience.

Next, a short sketch by Felipe Goncalves:

scan002And a collection from Mike Hasson:
mikehasson1

Mike took his drawing from the last 20-minute pose and created this nice finished piece:

mikehasson2

And last but not least, a collection of sketches from the evening by Annie Wu, with the last 20-minute drawing on the left, and ones and twos on the right:

frenzy_lohan

Aside from being the only female artist in the audience who has sent us a sketch since April (seriously, ladies, why is that, when you make up more than half of the audience?), Annie also created the illustration for this kick-ass CCRG poster. (I think I may have freaked her out a little bit at a session in the spring when she entered a contest and I recognized her style and started squealing like a fangirl about how awesome that poster is.) So you could say it’s fitting that I’m concluding this endless post with her drawings.

Thanks to Jeff Schock for the fabulous photos, Don at Artist & Craftsman Supply on North Ave. for giving out free sheets of high-quality rag drawing paper, Bill and Scott for drinking beer while manning the door, Russell at Windup for the awesome space and bartending and tune-selecting. And, last but certainly not least, a huge thanks to the dangerous beauty herself, Frenzy Lohan, for being our wonderful model in spite of the bum knee.

So, join us this Monday, when we’ll have the simply stunning model and dancer Deviana Fox as our muse for the evening. Among the various awesome prizes we’ll be giving away that night will be a copy of Scarlett Takes Manhattan–signed, with special messages to a lucky Charm City art monkey, by artist and illustrious Dr. Sketchy’s founder, Molly Crabapple, and her partner-in-crime, writer John Leavitt. See you then!
